Trade, Technology, and China’s Wage Inequality

چکیده
China experienced a sharp increase in wage inequality between unskilled and skilled workers in the late 1990s. Using a sample of 1,500 firms in five Chinese cities with available data for 1998 and 2000, we investigate the role of technology and foreign trade in determining China’s wage inequality. We find evidence that conditional on the technology deployed, trade reduces wage inequality in exporting firms. But we also identify an indirect effect where trade increases wage inequality because it tends to induce exporting firms to deploy more skill-biased technologies. While the presence of foreign-funded firms operating in China has no distinctive effect on wage inequality in general, a sharp difference exists between majority and minority foreign-owned firms. We find evidence that majority foreign-owned firms experienced skill-biased technical changes that tend to increase wage inequality while minority foreign-owned firms experienced unskilled-biased technical changes.

There is a popular belief that Chinese imports have devastated US and European manufacturing and contributed to rising inequality. Somewhat paradoxically, the consensus amongst empirical economists is that trade has not been a major cause of rising wage inequality (although this is largely based on datasets predating China’s rise). We argue that both views have underestimated the positive impac...

Recent widening of the wage gap between skilled and unskilled workers has been attributed mainly to skill-biased-technical-change and to trade liberalization. This paper examines the effects of the two in a unified model, in which trade and technology adoption are endogenous. The paper has two main results. First, technical progress increases the wage gap in developed and in less developed coun...

For this, we have employed a panel technique for 21 selected develo...
متن کاملThe Ownership Structure of Offshoring and Wage Inequality: Theory and Evidence from China
We document three striking facts that pertain to the impact of globalization on wage inequality in China: (a) the college wage premium in manufacturing stayed flat before China’s accession into the WTO in 2001, but rose dramatically thereafter; (b) since the accession, the growth in processing exports of foreign-owned firms has far surpassed the growth of joint ventures and Chinese-owned firms;...
متن کاملTrade , Technology and UK Wage Inequality by Jonathan Haskel and Matthew Slaughter
The U.K. skill premium fell from the 1950s to the late 1970s and then rose very sharply. This paper examines the contributions to these relative wage movements of international trade and technical change. We first measure trade as changes in product prices and technical change as TFP growth. Then we relate price and TFP changes to a set of underlying factors. Among a number of results, we find ...
